Tribute to Ruth Brown - February 4, 2007
I recently learned of the passing of Ms. Ruth Brown.
When I was three years old, my uncle Freddie had these 78's and played the first R & B song I'd ever heard. It was Ms Brown's Daddy, Daddy. I loved it and was hooked on music from that point on! Back then, she was more famous for the song Daddy, He Treats Your Daugher Mean. More than three decades later, I had the pleasure of seeing her perform at an intimate jazz club in N.J. She was fantastic and her band was "tight". I met this gracious lady and asked if she still performed Daddy, Daddy. She said she did not perform those songs anymore. Although our talk was brief, I'll never forget it. She had an amazing life, was an advocate for musicians rights, a Tony Award winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. I found Daddy, Daddy on an Atlantic R & B compilation set on vinyl before CD's became the thing.
Her music brightened my life. The world has lost one of it's musical greats.
